Office of the Provost Dear Colleagues, This year, Cal Poly is in the process of transitioning its learning management system, from PolyLearn-Moodle to Canvas. During this transition, the two systems will run alongside one another during winter, spring, and summer 2020, with Canvas being fully implemented in fall 2020. Canvas will offer instructors benefits including a clean and intuitive design, a SpeedGrader for the quick entry of feedback during grading, more options for grade display, easy activity weighting, and course modules to easily organize content and assignments. Canvas will also allow you to access your courses, grade assignments, and communicate with your students through its mobile app. We are also in the process of purchasing Ally, a tool that will scan content added to your course site and check this content to ensure it is accessible for all viewers regardless of their level of ability. When this tool is available, it will help instructors build a more inclusive learning environment and create course content with usability and accessibility in mind. Starting on December 9th, faculty may begin working in Canvas to set up their Canvas shells for use during winter quarter. If you would like to teach in Canvas during winter quarter, you may request to have your PolyLearn-Moodle course migrated to Canvas through this link. The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology (CTLT) offers workshops, face-to-face and video consultations, third-party plug-in support, online resources, and email and phone support. The university is providing robust support through Canvas 24/7 phone and online chat support, as well as online guides for instructors and students. For more information about the migration of sites from PolyLearn-Moodle to Canvas, Cal Poly’s Canvas template, and Canvas requirements, please visit canvassupport.calpoly.edu. If you have any questions regarding the transition or would like to schedule a training for your department, I encourage you to contact canvassupport@calpoly.edu. Sincerely, Mary E. Pedersen, Ph.D. Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
